What is Freedom of Association?

Freedom of Association is seen as a fundamental human right, enshrined in the U.S. Bill of Rights as well as in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. From a labor point of view, the freedom of association provides the basis for an employee’s right to organize a trade union, engage in collective bargaining, and freely associate with other members and labor organizations without interference from employers or government authorities.
