What is Disciplinary Procedure?

Disciplinary Procedure provides a process for handling actual or perceived misconduct by employees. Companies usually have a broad range of procedures and punishments, depending upon the nature and seriousness of the misbehavior. Procedures typically vary between either formal or informal processes.

Informal procedures may not be spelled out explicitly, but instead discretely handled by the supervisor. Formal procedures usually will be spelled out in the company employee manual or the employee’s contract. In those cases, supervisors have less leeway due to legal restrictions. Serious violations often result in the employee being suspended until the disciplinary process is completed.
