What is Developmental Counseling?

Developmental Counseling is an approach created by Allen Ivey, a retired University of Massachusetts psychology professor, that is rooted in theories that include human growth and development, family and environmental systems and change. Thus, it systematically incorporates several counseling approaches and theories into a single approach. It allows counselors to analyze people accurately and select the most effective treatment approach or intervention.

Businesses use it to help people do their jobs better, improving both their careers and the overall workplace and company performance. It can be conducted in several formats and settings. Frequently, outside coaches will be hired to help executives on an individual basis. It also can be used by managers to help employees with job performance and happiness.
