What is a Functional Job Analysis (FJA)?

Function Job Analysis (FJA )is a performance review process that examines a job, its environment, and an employee in a qualitative manner specific to the job and the employee. The job role is broken into seven categories: things, data, worker instructions, reasoning, people, mathematics, and language. An employee is then reviewed within each of these categories in a ranking system.

The performance assessment is based on how an employee relates to these areas in terms of their mental interaction (thinking), their interpersonal skills (teamwork), and physical actions (environment). Scales are developed in terms of how much discretion an employee has within the job and how they perform based on their level of autonomy.

sample job analysis would outline 1) specific job tasks 2) employee skills and 3) goals and success measurements. Ranking each item within these categories will then provide a broad view of an employee performance and help identify areas for improvement for both the employee and the employer.
